April 24, 2004BLUE DEVILS FALL OUT OF FIRST PLACE WITH LOSSES AT TOURNAMENT LA CROSSE - UW-Stout went into the WIAC Cluster Tournament in tie for first place, but fell off the top perch with two losses. The Blue Devils lost, 3-2, to UW-Oshkosh, and 7-5, to UW-Stevens Point, Saturday, April 24, at La Crosse. In the first game, Oshkosh (17-13, 9-4) scored three unearned runs off three Stout (24-14, 9-5) errors to hand the Titans a 3-2 win. Stout opened the game with two runs in the first inning as Kaela Wold (Jr, Eau Claire) cranked out a two-run double to right centerfield, scoring Kim Caswell (Sr, Stanley) and Erin O'Connell (Jr, Altoona). Titans' pitcher Melissa Groves tightened the screws after that, retiring the next 16 batters until O'Connell hit a double in the sixth as Stout was left with two hits on the game.A couple of throwing errors by Stout in the sixth allowed two Titan runners to score and Lyndsay Allen drove in the game winner with a groundout. Donley allowed only three hits, had three strikeouts and allowed only one walk, but could not get the offensive and defensive help. Groves struck out two and walked one. Even a three-run home run by Jamie Gorges (Jr, New London) in the sixth inning against Stevens Point (16-18, 5-8) wouldn't be enough. Gorges round tripper gave Stout a 4-3, but the Blue Devils allowed four runs in the bottom of the inning to send their losing streak to four games. Caswell delivered a lead off home run in the first inning, but the Pointers took the lead with a three-run third inning. Stout scored a run in the seventh on a Wold double, but stranded two runners. April 22, 2004BLUE DEVILS DROP TWO 2-0 GAMES TO LA CROSSEMENOMONIE - UW-Stout racked up 10 hits over two games, but had no runs to show for it as the first place Blue Devils fell into a two-way tie for first by dropping a pair of 2-0 games to UW-La Crosse, Thursday, April 22 at Alumni Field in Menomonie. The Blue Devils (24-12, 9-3) left the bases loaded in the sixth inning of the first game as they stranded six runners in a six hit attack. La Crosse (15-18, 6-6) scored early in both games, scoring a run in the first and the third innings of the first game and struck gold with two runs in the first inning of the nightcap. The many motions of La Crosse pitcher Allie Romoren in the circle handcuffed the Blue Devils with four hits in the first game. Erin O'Connell (Jr, Altoona) and Kaela Wold (Jr, Eau Claire) each got two hits for the Blue Devils. The Eagles chipped their way to a single run in the first inning with three consecutive singles. A wild pitch and a stolen base advanced the Eagles' Lindsay Spraker into scoring postion in the third, and she was brought home on a Carley Anderson double. La Crosse got all they would need in the first inning of the second game with Spraker's two-run single to left field. Wold was 2-for-3 for the Blue Devils in the game. April 20, 2004KAELA WOLD GARNERS WIAC SOFTBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK HONORS MENOMONIE - UW-Stout's Kaela Wold (Jr, Eau Claire/Altoona) hit .469 in 10 games last week, cracking out 15 hits in 32 at-bats, scoring seven runs and driving in 12 runs, as well as stealing four bases in four attempts. For her efforts, Wold was named the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) softball player of the week.Wold had four doubles and two home runs, with both homers coming in a 15-1 win over UW-Oshkosh were she had a 4-for-5 effort with five RBI. Wold had a strong WIAC Cluster Tournament where Stout went undefeated. At the Cluster Tournament in Platteville, April 17-18, Wold hit .467, going 7-for-15 with nine RBI, on three doubles and two home runs.
April 25, 2004BLUE DEVILS HANG ON TO TAKE A WIN OVER PLATTEVILLE MENOMONIE - A win is a win is a win, but UW-Stout made it extremely difficult to enjoy their 10-9 second game win over UW-Platteville, Sunday, April 25. The Pioneers had edged Stout, 7-6, in the opener. With the Blue Devils (6-23, 5-15) leading 10-0 in the seventh inning and only one strike away from ending the game by the 10-run, the Pioneer's Brandon Ihm not only broke up Chad Tousley's (So, Prescott) shutout bid with a one-run double, he opened the floodgate for eight unanswered runs in the final two innings. After Ihm drove in the seventh inning run, Platteville (12-17, 8-8) scored four runs in the eighth and four runs in the ninth. With the tenuous 10-9 lead, two outs and runners on first and third, Rob Heller (Fr, La Crosse) came in to end the game on a strikeout and pick up his first collegiate save. Stout had little trouble hitting the ball and scoring runs early, led by Jake Riek (Sr, Boyceville), who was only a single away from hitting the cycle. Riek was 3-for-6 with two RBI and two runs scored. Stout collected 13 hits in the first seven innings of the game, but got none in the final two. Platteville finished with 13 hits, but only five in the first six innings. Greg Meinertz (Jr, La Crosse) was 3-for-5 with three RBI and Jim Foreman (Sr, Apple Valley, Minn) hit a two-run home run in the fifth. Ihm was 2-for-6 with three RBI for the Pioneers. Jason Watson was 3-for-4 with three RBI. In the opener, Platteville's designated hitter David Reifenberger not only got the game winning hit, he came on in relief to get the win on the mound. Reifenberger came on in the top of the eighth inning after Foreman hit a two-run single to give Stout a 6-5 lead. Reifenberger shut down Stout's final five batters, then delivered the game winner with two runners on in the bottom of the ninth. The game was a back-and-forth affair throughout with Platteville tying the score twice, then taking the lead twice. Stout scored a single run in the second, then tacked on another run in the fourth. The Pioneers tied the score at 2-2 in the fourth, only to see Stout jump out 4-2 on RBI by Riek and Dustin VanderVorst (Fr, River Falls). The Pioneers added two more runs in the fifth to tie again at 4-4, then took a 5-4 lead in the seventh on a passed ball. Stout regained the lead with Foreman's double in the eighth.Foreman was 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored, while Jon Kroening (Sr, Ladysmith) was 2-for-4 with two RBI. Rick Pepper matched Reifenberger's 2-for-4, two RBI performance for the Pioneers. Ihm and Watson were also 2-for-4. Stout is off until Friday, April 30 when they travel to St. Thomas. The Blue Devils will play at Upper Iowa, Sunday, May 2.April 24, 2004BLUE DEVILS PLAY EXTREMES, LOSE TWO TO PIONEERSMENOMONIE - In game one, the runs and hits were difficult to come by. In game two, they flowed like water. But the result was still the same as UW-Stout lost two games to UW-Platteville, 1-0, 14-12, Saturday, April 24 at Nelson Field. Stout did not cross the plate in the opener and were held to five hits. In the nightcap, the Blue Devils (5-22, 4-14) rallied back several times as they knocked around four Platteville (11-16, 7-7) pitchers for 18 hits. The Pioneers ran up a 7-0 lead after three innings in the second game, but Stout tightened the gap slightly with a two-run third inning on a two-run double by Nick Ziegler (So, Plymouth, Minn). Stout added two more runs in the fourth on RBIs by Luke Schultz (Fr, Menomonie) and Todd Brunclik (So, Birchwood). Platteville took a 9-4 lead in the sixth, but the Blue Devils used five hits in the bottom of the inning to score five runs, highlighted by two-run doubles by Greg Meinertz (Jr, La Crosse) and Jim Foreman (Sr, Apple Valley, Minn), to tie the score at 9-9. The lead quickly evaporated with a four run outburst by Platteville in the seventh. The Pioneers added another run in the eighth to go ahead 14-9. Stout put up two runs in the eighth on a Meinertz triple and Foreman groundout. Stout scrapped for another run in the ninth when Jake Riek (Jr, Boyceville) singled, then stole second. He scored on Brunclik's single to center field. Brandt Buckley (So, Menomonie), Ziegler and Jon Kroening (Sr, Ladysmith) each cracke dout three hits for the Blue Devils. Meinertz and Foreman each recorded three RBI. Baily Brueggen collected three hits for the Pioneers. In the opening game, the Pioneers' Ryan Angst hit the game-winning double in the seventh inning to score Ryan Levendoski from second base. The Blue Devils retaliated in their half of the inning, loading the bases with one out, but a strikeout and groundout left the bases loaded. Stout went down in order in the final two innings. Stout left runners on second and third in the second, but failed to cross the plate. Stout managed five hits to Platteville's nine. Stout stranded seven runners, Platteville six. Joe Huiting (Sr, Little Chute) went the distance for the Blue Devils, striking out three and walking one. Jeremy Granlund pitched six innings for the Pioneers for the win, strking out five. Paul Kane came on with the bases loaded in the seventh, pitched out of the jam and struck out three to record his second save of the season. Riek hit 2-for-4 for the Blue Devils, while EJ Zbikowski and Dave Reifenberger were also 2-for-4. Nick Pepper had two hits. April 22, 2004SEVERSON THROWS A DANDY, BUT BLUE DEVILS SWEPT BY LA CROSSEMENOMONIE - UW-Stout's Jon Severson (Jr, Hayfield, Minn) threw a fine enough effort to record his first win of the season, but the Blue Devils went down, 3-1, in the second game, on the heels of a 10-7 first game loss to UW-La Crosse, Thursday, April 22. Severson went eight-and-two-thirds innings, striking out five but was saddled with the loss by giving up two runs in the second and another run in the sixth. With the win, the Eagles (9-20, 5-11) moved ahead of Stout (5-20, 4-12) by one game for the battle for the final WIAC playoff spot. Severson didn't get a lot of offensive help as Stout had only five hits, but base running mistakes cost the Blue Devils as they stranded only three runners. Stout got their only run of the game in the bottom of the eighth on an error. The Eagles had three players with two hits, while only Stout's Jon Kroening (Sr, Ladysmith) collected more than a hit, going 2-for-4. The two teams slugged the ball around in the first game, with La Crosse getting 11 hits and Stout 10. After Stout went ahead 4-2 in the fourth, the Eagles took the lead for good with a four-run outburst in the fifth 24-25. Greg Meinertz (Jr, La Crosse) was 3-for-5 in the game with two RBI. Tim Nielson (So, Rosemount, Minn) and Jason Kuehn (Jr, Augusta) were both 2-for-4 for the Blue Devils. For the Eagles, Matt Zieba was 4-for-6 and Steve Ems was 3-for-4.
