PLATTEVILLE WINS BARN BURNER OVER BLUE DEVILS, 68-66

MENOMONIE
- After trailing by as much as nine points with 6:37 remaining in the game, UW-Stout had a last chance to win the contest at the buzzer against UW-Platteville, but the 3-point shot clanged off the back of the rim and Platteville took a 68-66 win out of Johnson Fieldhouse, Saturday, Feb. 15.

The Pioneers’ Brad Reitzner led the Pioneers’ charge, making all 10 of his free throw opportunities in the second half on his way to a team-high 17 points.

Platteville (11-12, 7-7) overcame a two point halftime deficit to a take a 57-44 lead with in the final seven minutes of the game, only to see Stout (14-8, 9-5) cut the lead to one, 67-66 with 10 seconds remaining.

The Pioneers’ made one free throw, but missed the second and Stout’s Julian Greer (Jr, St. Paul, Minn) pulled down the rebound. Luke Loney (Fr, River Falls) got the ball at the top of the key and launched it just before the buzzer, but the ball hit the back of the iron and fell harmlessly away.

Stout got a game-high 18 points from Andy Bray (Jr, Menominee, Mich) and 13 points from Greer and Casey Chapman (Sr, Hartland).

Tyler Selk added 13 points for Platteville and Bryan Stangel and Brandon Temperly each added 11 points. Temperly pulled down 12 rebounds.

TEMPLER LEADS STOUT IN A PERFECT NIGHT AT THE LINE

LA CROSSE -
Perfect!

That's what UW-Stout was from the free throw line, and Nate Templer (Jr, Beaver Dam) was the Blue Devil leading the team in perfection as Stout slipped past UW-La Crosse, 63-58, Wednesday, Feb. 12 in La Crosse.

Templer scored all 19 of his points in the second half and was a perfect 11-of-11 from the line as the Blue Devils (14-7, 9-4) kept their conference title hopes alive by hitting a school record 16-of-16 free throws, 13 in the second half.

Templer was blanked in the first half as Stout trailed 31-30 at halftime, then eked out a lead midway through the second half when Templer hit four free throws and two pointer to give Stout their first lead of the half, 47-45. Templer scored four more points over the next two minutes to give Stout a 51-48 lead.

The Eagles' (6-16, 2-11) tied the score on a Casey Taggatz 3-pointer. Andy Bray (Jr, Menominee, Mich) lifted Stout to a 53-51 lead. Templer added two more throws and a Nate Severson (Fr, Eau Claire) bucket pushed Stout out to a 57-51 lead with 3:47 remaining.

La Crosse pulled to within one, but two free throws (what else?) by Templer, a layup by Bray and two additional free throws by Jeff Vandenberghe (Jr, Coon Rapids, Minn) would be enough for Stout.

Bray finished with 21 points and Casey Chapman (Sr, Hartland) added 10 points. Templer pulled down 11 rebounds to finish with a double-double.

The Eagles' Rocky Boldin took scoring honors with 23 points. Jason Scheunemann pitched in 11 points in 40 minutes of work.

The win moves Stout into a tie with UW-Whitewater for second place. The Warhawks lost to conference leader UW-Stevens Point, 71-53.

Over the last three games, Stout is shooting 54-of-58 from the charity stripe, good for 93 percent.
