BLUE DEVILS RECOVER FROM FLAT FIRST HALF TO DOWN SUPERIOR

SUPERIOR -
Trailing by three points at halftime to a team that has yet to win a conference game this season, UW-Stout caught fire in the second half to go on to an 89-66 win over UW-Superior, Wednesday, Feb. 5 in Superior.

After allowing the Yellowjackets (1-18, 0-12 WIAC) to shoot 57 percent in the first half and the three point lead, Stout's (15-6, 7-5) turned up the defense and allowed Superior to hit only 8-of-26 second half field goals. Stout also forced 18 second half turnovers, and kept their own turnovers down to six in the second half. Superior finished the game with 30 turnovers to Stout's 17. Stout nabbed 17 steals, 14 in the second half.

Laura Verdegan (Jr, Tony) led Stout's scoring parade, scoring 19 second half points to finish with a game- and career-high 21 points and had eight steals.

Jessie Herrman (Jr, Barron) kept Stout in the game in the first half, scoring all 11 of her points before halftime.

Sara Kahl (Jr, Menomonie) and Erin Churchill (So, Plum City) chipped in 12 points, Lindsey Erichsen (So, Spring Valley, Minn) 11 and Steffanie Nemitz (Fr, Bloomington) 10.

MASLOWSKI HELPS BLUE DEVILS PUT DOWN YELLOWJACKETS

MENOMONIE -
Like a bunch of pesky yellowjackets swarming around an open can of Pepsi in the summer, UW-Superior refused to go away as UW-Stout came out with a 94-73 win, Wednesday, Feb. 5 at Johnson Fieldhouse.

Although Stout (13-7, 8-4) led for most of the game - generally around a 15 point lead - the Blue Devils could never seem to swat Superior (4-16, 1-11) away.

If Adam Maslowski (Fr, Marshfield) didn't deliver the swatter, he was the one that brought it out. Coming off the bench in the second half, Maslowski scored a career-high 13 points - all in the second half - and seven points he got in a two minute stretch around the 15 minute mark.

Maslowksi connected on 4-of-5 field goals, including 2-of-2 3-point shots, to go along with 3-of-4 at the line.

Blue Devil guard Casey Chapman (Sr, Hartland) led all scorers with 19 points. Andy Bray (Jr, Menominee, Mich) added 18 points, Julian Greer (Jr, St. Paul, Minn) 17 and Jeff Vandenberghe (Jr, Coon Rapids, Minn) 11.

The Yellowjackets got 17 points from their leading scorer, Cody Kastern. Bob Riley had 10 and Matt Bailey and Andrew Browning added 10 points.

Stout was blistering from the field in the first half, shooting 74 percent to take a 46-30 halftime lead. The Blue Devils cooled down a bit in the second half and finished shooting 62 percent. Stout shot 28-of-32 from the line for 89 percent.

BLUE DEVILS FALL, 6-1, TO NO. 1 RANKED ST. NORBERT

DE PERE -
No. 1 ranked St. Norbert College scored three goals in the final period to take a 6-1 win over UW-Stout, Saturday, Feb. 8 in DePere.

St. Norbert scored two goals in the first, added another in the second on the power play, and tacked on another power play goal early in the third and another at the five minute mark.

The Blue Devils (6-19-0, 2-12-0 NCHA) scored their lone goal in the third period when Nate Legler (Jr, Lakeville, Minn), on an assist by Dan Riffe (Jr, Byron, Ill), scored with eight minutes remaining in the game. St. Norbert scored their final goal of the game with five minutes left.

Stout goalie Jeff Dotson (Jr, Chanhassen, Minn) stopped 48 shots as St. Norbert outshot Stout, 54-18.

The Green Knights (22-1-2, 12-1-1 NCHA) clinched the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association, their fifth in seven years, with the win.

The quarterfinals of the NCHA playoffs will begin a two-day series, Friday, Feb. 14. Stout will be at No. 2 seeded UW-Superior.

BLUE DEVILS COME UP SHORT AT LAKE FOREST, 5-3

LAKE FOREST, Ill -
Lake Forest College scored four unanswered goals to defeat UW-Stout, 5-3, Friday, Feb. 7 at Lake Forest, Ill.

The Foresters (13-7-4, 6-6-1 NCHA) opened the scoring with a goal only 97 seconds into the game when Robin Charest scored.

The Blue Devils (6-18-0, 2-11-0) wasted little time answering Lake Forest when Dan Riffe (Jr, Byron, Ill) scored 2-minutes, 18-seconds into the game, assisted by Mitch Kellin (Jr, Cohasset, Minn) and Jake Hemmah (So, Red Wing, Minn).

Stout doubled their pleasure midway through the period with a goal by John Schaffner (So, Janesville), assisted by Nate Legler (Jr, Lakeville, Minn). Schaffner tacked on his second goal of the evening three minutes into the second period, assisted by Bryan Cummings (Jr, Austin, Minn).

That would be it for Stout as the Foresters continued to pelt goalie Jeff Dotson (Jr, Chanhassen, Minn). Dotson stopped 49 shots in the game, but Lake Forest came alive halfway through the second period and never died. Ryan Scapinello scored at 10:38 and Bryan O'Connor scored at 18:39 to tie the score.

The Foresters went ahead early in the third period on a goal by Brad Saint, then got the empty net goal with 10 seconds left to seal the win.
