August 13, 2002BLUE DEVILS PICKED TO WIN CONFERENCE IN PRESEASON POLLMADISON - UW-Stout and UW-Stevens Point each received four first place votes in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) preseason poll conducted by the WIAC sports information directors and released at the annual WIAC Football Media Day, Tuesday, Aug. 13. The Blue Devils, which finished third last season after a championship season in 2000, got the edge over the Pointers, the 2001 co-champions, by ranking higher in the voting by SIDs that did not rank them first. UW-Eau Claire, which shared the title last year with the Pointers, were picked third. UW-Platteville was fourth, UW-Whitewater fifth, UW-La Crosse sixth, UW-River Falls seventh, and UW-Oshkosh eighth. The last two years, the teams that finished the previous season in last place, rose the following season to lay claim to the title. Whitewater and Oshkosh tied for last place during the 2001 season. Parity has been a word kicked around at the WIAC football media days for several years, and the league has demonstrated just that. From 1988 to 1997, only LaCrosse or Whitewater carried home league titles. Since the 1998 campaign, six different teams (out of the eight league teams) have either won the title or shared it. During those four seasons, only Stout, in 2000, won the title outright. 2002 WIAC Preseason Poll1. UW-Stout (4); 2. UW-Stevens Point (4); 3. UW-Eau Claire; 4. UW-Platteville; 5. UW-Whitewater; 6. August 24, 2002ELLINGSON RESIGNS AS CROSS COUNTRY AND TRACK COACHMENOMONIE - After one year, Keith Ellingson has resigned as the UW-Stout head men's cross country and men's track and field coach, effective immediately. Ellingson said the inability to sell his house in Iowa and the separation from his family, who were still in Iowa, led to his decision to return to Iowa. Ellingson has commuted to Stout, spending a week or two in Menomonie, then returning home to Iowa for a short weekend before returning to Menomonie. "I started thinking about whether I wanted to risk doing that again to my family for another year," Ellingson said, "and decided 'No.'" In the interim, women's cross country coach Joe Harlan will assume the men's cross country coaching duties. A decision has not yet been reached on the men's track coaching duties or the classroom load that was part of the position. Both cross country teams reported to preseason workouts, Saturday, Aug. 24. July 24, 2002WELL-CREDENTIALED CLASS HIGHLIGHTS MEN'S BASKETBALL RECRUITSMENOMONIE - The sounds of basketballs hitting the floor has been resonating throughout Johnson Fieldhouse all summer long with basketball camps and a number of AAU basketball events occurring. With that sound ringing in his ears, UW-Stout men's basketball coach Eddie Andrist has been chomping at the bit to get going and with his 2002-03 recruiting class, he has good reason. Mixing local recruits with recruits from around the country gives Andrist, what he believes, one of the top recruiting classes for UW-Stout. "I think you would have to go back a long way to find a class that has such great credentials in the basketball arena," Andrist said. "We are excited about what our new players bring to the table. This could be one of the best recruiting classes in a long, long time." As Andrist said, the on-the-court credentials of his incoming players are very strong. Forward Julian Greer (Jr, Brooklyn Center, Minn) transfers from Central Lakes Community College, in Brainerd, Minn., where he averaged 16 points and nine rebounds per game. In his high school career, Greer broke both the 2000 point and 1000 rebound plateaus and was a three-time all-state player and USA Today High School All-America honorable mention choice. Point guard Charles Taylor (So, Louisville, Ky) played a year at NCAA Division I Louisville. The 1996 Kentucky high school player of the year was a Kentucky all-star and a McDonalds' All-America. Forward Landon Stack (So, Ashland City, Tenn) comes to the Blue Devils via NCAA Division II Lander University in South Carolina. At Cheatham County Central High School, Stack averaged 15 points, nine rebounds, four assists and three blocked shots. Stack's brother, Ryan, played three seasons in the NBA with Cleveland. LaMorris Wallace (Fr, Markham, Ill) redshirted last season at Redlands Community College, but at Bremen High School in the Chicago area, the 6-foot, 10-inch center averaged 15 points, 12 rebounds and six blocked shots. In one Illinois state sectional final contest, Wallace scored 29 points - including eight dunks - pulled down 15 rebounds and blocked nine shots. Center Cornelius Pitts (So, Chicago, Ill) played a year at Redlands where he was a member of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) II national championship team last season. At Tilden High School, Pitts averaged 18 points, 15 rebounds and seven blocked shots. Forward Terry Farmer (Fr, Kenosha) and guard Jeremy Hernandez (Fr, Brooklyn Center, Minn) return to the hardwood after a year off. Farmer averaged 10 points and six rebounds for St. Joseph's High School as the led his team to a Wisconsin state runner-up title. Hernandez averaged 16 points, five rebounds and five assists at Brooklyn Center, Minn., High School. Nate Severson (Fr, Eau Claire), Jordan Burns (Fr, Colfax), Lucas Bauer (Fr, Strum), and Jesse Schmidt (Fr, Boyceville) lead the local parade of recruits. Severson, a 6-1 guard, scored 297 points at 13.5 average during the past season and finished with 986 career points, the second highest total in Eau Claire North history. Severson was an honorable mention all-state pick for the Associated Press and Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, as well as a first team member of the Leader-Telegram's All-Northwest first team. Burns, Severson's cousin, played varsity all four years for the Vikings and the 6-3 swing player averaged 14.9 points and 4.5 rebounds last season. Burns was a Dunn-St. Croix first team all-conference pick in 2001-02, and second team peick in 2000-01 and 1999-2000. He was a fifth team choice on the all-Northwest team and the Colfax team MVP. Bauer comes to the Blue Devils from a very successful Eleva-Strum program. Bauer, a four year player, was a member of four consecutive conference championship teams. Bauer, a 6-5 forward, averaged 6.1 points as a freshman when the team was 11-10, 13.7 as a sophomore when the Cardinals were 20-3, 18.9 as a junior when the team was 18-4 and last season, averaged 17.0 points when his team dropped only one contest, finishing 22-1. Bauer finished his career with 1254 points. Schmidt, a three-time first team all-conference choice, helped put his Boyceville team to within one game of the state tournament this season. The Bulldogs' all-time leading scorer, Schmidt, a 6-5 forward, finished his career with 1501 total points and also yanked down 761 career rebounds. Schmidt was named to the all-Northwest fourth team his senior year. Rounding out the class are guards Alan Ng (Jr, Columbia Heights, Minn), a transfer from Anoka Ramsey Community College, Sam Sekanick (Fr, Rice Lake) and Luke Loney (Fr, River Falls), forwards Anthony Wilder (Fr, Hayward) and Mike Knutson (Fr, Hayward) and center Nate Panning (Fr, Minneapolis, Minn.)
