April 14, 2001BLUE DEVILS COMPLETE SWEEP AT OSHKOSH TOURNAMENTOSHKOSH - The UW-Stout softball team extended their winning streak to five by winning their final two games at the UW-Oshkosh sponsored Snowball Classic, Saturday, April 14. Stout (15-13) defeated the Milwaukee School of Engineering, 9-4, then downed conference rival UW-Superior, 11-3. Erin Slaikeu (Sr, North St. Paul, Minn), who was on a tear for the tournament, drove in one run in the first inning with a double, then collected two RBI with a double in the second inning, then scored on an outfield error to give Stout a commanding 7-1 lead. Slaikeu, who would notch 12 RBI in the five games of the weekend, continued to stroke the ball, driving in three runs while going 3-for-3 against Superior. Lindsay Mechelke (Fr, Lake Elmo, Minn) was 2-for-3 with four RBI, including a three-run home run in the third to put Stout ahead for good. The Blue Devils scored five runs in the fourth, with Mechelke and Slaikeu each driving in a run. Jessie Ustby (Sr, Onalaska) got the RBI in the fifth inning which ended the game, a bases loaded single. The five-game winning streak is Stout's longest since the 1998 season when the Blue Devils ran off 10 straight wins. Stout will be at Mt. Senario, Tuesday, April 17, then will hope to open the conference season when they travel to UW-Eau Claire, Thursday, April 19. April 13, 2001BLUE DEVILS MAKE TURNAROUND AS THEY SWEEP THREE AT OSHKOSHOSHKOSH - The UW-Stout softball team shook off a horrendous performance from earlier in the week as they won three games in the opening day of the UW-Oshkosh Snowball Classic, Friday, April 13. The Blue Devils also ran their record to .500 (13-13) as they smashed Aurora University, 12-2, edged host UW-Oshkosh, 2-0, and scored six runs in the fourth inning to take a 7-2 win over Calvin College. In Stout's last outing, April 9, the Blue Devils were blanked in two five-inning games at Concordia-St. Paul. Stout had little trouble with Aurora, as Angie Pinnow (Sr, Bruce) set the tone by hitting a lead-off home run. But Stout needed to work for their first shutout of the season in downing Oshkosh. Erin Slaikeu (Sr, North St. Paul, Minn) hit a one-run double in the third and Kim Caswell (Fr, Stanley) drove in a run in the fifth with a sacrifice fly. Jenni Bostrom (Fr, Circle Pines, Minn) was masterful on the mound, striking out 11 and only allowing three Oshkosh runners to reach as far as second as she recorded her first collegiate shutout in the one-hitter. In the final game of the day, Pinnow hit two home runs - a solo shot in the first and two-run blast in the fourth that gave Stout a 4-2 lead over Calvin. Slaikeu added a two-run home run in the fourth and Cindy Shankle (Fr, East Bethel, Minn) collected a pair of doubles in the fourth. Maren Christianson (Fr, Fort Atkinson) picked up the win, coming on in relief with one out in the first inning to allow only two hits over 3.2 innings. Tracy Kokke (Fr, Galesville) allowed only one hit in the final three innings. April 9, 2001BLUE DEVILS DROP PAIR OF GAMES TO CONCORDIA-ST. PAULST. PAUL, Minn - Just one day after building up a four game winning streak - their longest in four seasons - the UW-Stout softball team saw the streak snapped in a big way as Concordia-St. Paul handed the Blue Devils two five inning defeats, Monday, April 9 in St. Paul, Minn. The Golden Bears (10-7) held Stout (10-13) to one hit in each game as they took a 9-0 and 8-0 win at Lutheran Field. The Bears wasted little time jumping all over the Blue Devils, collecting five runs in the first inning of each game. Stout was just coming off a four game winning streak as they went undefeated in four games at a tournament in Des Moines, Iowa, over the weekend. The Blue Devils will try to shake off the defeats as they head into conference play Wednesday, April 11 at UW-La Crosse.
April 9, 2001HOME RUN DERBY HIGHLIGHTS BLUE DEVIL SWEEP OVER MLCMENOMONIE - When the winds died down, the UW-Stout baseball team brought out the big lumber as they clubbed six home runs in the nightcap of a sweep over Martin Luther College, Monday, April 9 at Wakanda Park. After taking a six-inning 13-0 win in the first game, the Blue Devils disposed of the Knights in five innings, 10-0. JW Dachel (Jr, Bloomer) led the Stout (15-1-1) assault, hitting two round trippers. Brad O'Connell (Sr, Elk Mound), Eric Lund (Sr, Ashland), Brad Barneson (Jr, Eleva) and Brock Meyer (So, Lyle, Minn) each sent a ball over the fence. All but Lund's shot went over left field or left center. Lund smashed his to the opposite field clearing the right field marker. Stout jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the second inning, highlighted by back-to-back dingers by O'Connell and Dachel. O'Connell, Dachel and Barneson all drove in three runs. While the hitters were producing, pitcher Clyde Tedrick (Sr, Midland, Texas) produced four innings of hitless ball. The Knights (1-8) broke up the no-hitter in the top of the fifth off relief pitching. Matt Lunde (Jr, Eau Claire) picked up his fifth win of the season as he scattered four hits, racked up four strikeouts and allowed no walks in the opening game. Brian Bee (Jr, Bloomer) cleaned up in the sixth inning, putting the side down in order. Dave Rueber (Sr, Afton, Minn) went 3-for-4 with three RBI to lead Stout's 14 hit attack. Josh Johnson (Sr, Oregon) was 3-for-3 with two RBI. Eddie Young (La Crosse) was 2-for-3 with three RBI. The game was originally scheduled for April 2, but was postponed because of snow on the field. The game was moved to Wakanda Park because Nelson Field was still not ready, marking the first time Stout has played at Wakanda Park since the mid-1970s. The weather conditions were anything but picnic-like, with strong winds blowing in from right field during the first game but dying down for the second game. The temperature was about 40 degrees. The lastest American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) poll was released Monday, and the inactive Blue Devils dropped from 10th to 11th. Stout had been idle since March 17. Stout is scheduled to open conference play Saturday, April 14 when they travel to UW-Superior.
April 13, 2001LUER WINS TWO EVENTS, BEDSTED, SORVALA TRADE PLACESEAU CLAIRE - Jenney Luer (Jr, Colfax) won two events in dominating fashion and Heidi Bedsted (Jr, Plainview, Minn) and Lisa Sorvala (New Brighton, Minn) traded places to lead the UW-Stout women's track & field team to a fourth place finish at the eight-team Blugold Invitational, Friday, April 13 in Eau Claire. Luer simply pulverized the school record in the discus, tossing the plate 150-feet, 5-inches to qualify automatically to the NCAA Division III Championships. Luer eclipsed the school record of 135-feet set by Terri Fahrendorff in 1992. Luer's nearest competition settle for a throw of 139-feet. Luer won the shot put by almost two feet, marking a throw of 41-11.5. The second place toss was 40-5. Stout's Sara Pivec (Jr, Coon Rapids, Minn) was third (39-8). Bedsted and Sorvala each picked up a first place finish and a third place finish. Bedsted was first in the 5000-meter run (19-minutes, 0.33-seconds) and third in the 3000-meter (11:25).
