January 6, 2001BLUE DEVILS KEEP PRESSURE ON TITANS, BUT COME UP SHORTMENOMONIE - UW-Stout kept finding some answers, but just not enough of them as the Blue Devils fell to nationally ranked UW-Oshkosh, 90-79, Saturday, Jan. 6 at Johnson Fieldhouse. Stout (10-4, 3-3) fell behind by double digit scores often, but managed to fire their way back into close range, only to see the more physical Titans (12-1, 5-0) regain control. Trailing by as much as 18 points early in the second half, Stout pulled to within seven points before Oshkosh went on a 9-0 run midway through the half. Stout pulled to within seven points around the six minute mark, but saw the Titans go out to a 12 point lead. Again Stout came back, and Sara Kahl's (Fr, Menomonie) 3-pointer pulled the Blue Devils to five points with 1-minute, 42-seconds remaining, but that would be the closest the Blue Devils would get as the Titans hit a jumper, then worked the free throw line for their final seven points. The Titans' Amanda Dickerson took Stout to task, scoring 31 points to lead four Oshkosh players in double digits. Kristin Steckmesser pitched in 18 points and Melissa Schweitzer and Jamie Turtenwald each scored 14 points. Tanya Halbach (So, Janesville) led Stout with 17 points and Laura Verdegan (Fr, Tony) hit a collegiate-high 13 points. Stout will be at UW-Superior Wednesday, Jan. 10, then will return home to host UW-Whitewater, Saturday, Jan. 13 at 3 p.m. January 3, 2001BLUE DEVILS DIG A HOLE THEY CAN'T GET OUT OFRIVER FALLS - The UW-Stout women's basketball team dug a hole early they could not climb out of as they fell, 90-76, in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) contest to UW-River Falls, Wednesday, Jan. 3 at River Falls. The Falcons (9-3, 3-1) shot out to as much as a 16 point lead midway through the first half. Stout (10-3, 3-2) clawed back to as close as three and four points a couple of times in the second half, but three buckets by the Falcons' Andrea Long gave River Falls a 10 point lead. Stout could get no closer than five points as the Falcons milked the free throw line in the final four minutes, making 12-of-14 charity shots. Bonnie Thoe (Fr, Hayfield, Minn) came off the bench to lead Stout with 14 points. Sara Kahl (Fr, Menomonie), who is recovering from an ankle injury, chipped in 11 points and Amy Zelinger (Jr, Racine) finished with 10 points. All five Falcon starters scored in double digits with Long leading the way with 17 points. Mara Reif-Wenner and Melissa McKernon each scored 16 points, Sarah Pollock added 14 and Abby Nelson 13.
January 6, 2001TITANS USE A COUPLE OF RUNS TO PUT AWAY STOUTOSHKOSH - UW-Oshkosh used a 21-4 run to close out the first half, then ran off a 23-7 run to open up the second stanza and went on to a 90-69 conference win over UW-Stout, Saturday, Jan. 6 at Oshkosh. Stout (7-6, 1-5) led for the first seven minutes of the game, but Oshkosh (10-3, 2-3) got untracked and never looked back. Oshkosh got a balanced scoring attack with five players in double digits, led by Tim Dworak's 19 points. The Blue Devils, who shot 40 percent from the field, were led by Oties Epps (Sr, Highland Park, Mich), who scored 15 points. Casey Chapman (So, Hartland) came off the bench to score 10 points. Oshkosh, who shot 57 percent in the second half and 48 percent for the game, also got 14 points from Aric Vaubel, 13 points from Kari Hannula, 12 points from Justin Kamps and 10 from Nick Scherer. Both teams made numerous trips to the free throw line with Stout connecting on 22-of-28 free throws and Oshkosh hit 28-of-34. Stout returns home Wednesday, Jan. 10 to host UW-Superior at 7 p.m. January 3, 2001BLUE DEVILS SEE ONE SLIP THROUGH THEIR FINGERSMENOMONIE - Call this the one that got away as UW-Stout let a 13 point lead dissolve to a last minute loss and the Blue Devils dropped a 77-74 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) contest to UW-River Falls, Wednesday, Jan. 3 at Johnson Fieldhouse. Stout (7-5, 1-4) held as much as a 12 point lead with 13 minutes left in the game, but the Falcons (8-4, 3-1) cut the lead bit-by-bit until Kent Becker tied the score at 59-59 on a 3-pointer with 7-minutes, 25-second left, then gave River Falls their first lead of the game at 5:39 when he drove the lane and drew a foul for a 64-61 score. The two teams traded leads and the score was tied six times in the final minutes before River Falls' Shawn Timm hit a 3-pointer with 38 seconds left for a 75-74 lead. The Blue Devils had an opportunity to take the lead, but the shot clanked iron, the Falcons recovered and added an insurance bucket. Stout opened the game red-hot, hitting their first four shots without a miss, including three 3-pointers. River Falls made the score a six-point game at halftime when Timm hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer. Nate Templer (Fr, Beaver Dam) and Dave Loewe (Jr, Hiles) each scored 14 points to lead Stout. Aaron Vachowiak (Sr, Wausau) chipped in 13 points, Pat Von Feldt (Sr, Stevens Point) 12 and Oties Epps (Sr, Highland Park, Mich) 11. Timm led all scorers with 15 points. Becker and Edmund Johnson each scored 14 points and Rich Melzer had 11 points.

But Gustavus used a four goal third period to snap Stout's undefeated streak at five games with a 5-2 win, Saturday, Jan. 6 at the Dunn County Ice Arena. The Gusties (3-8-2) took advantage of a 4-on-3 situation late in the first period when Mike Formas scored with 47 second left in the period. St. Olaf drew first blood, scoring only one minute into the game. But Stout (10-3-1) answered back three minutes later when Nichols and Decker combined to allow Cullen Flaherty (So, Duluth, Minn) to score. Brad Weappa (Sr, Brooklyn Center, Minn) tied the score early in the second period, and Nichols picked up the eventual game winning goal early in the third period, with assists from Decker and Weappa. St. Olaf brought the score to within in one goal four minutes later. Stout goalie Jeff Dotson (Fr, Chanhassen, Minn) recorded nine saves in the third, 33 total saves on the night as he got his third win of the season.
